Our Family explores the unique struggles experienced by the LGBTQIA+ community, focusing particularly on the feelings of queer people today. Nathan Orchard draws upon both historic and modern examples of prejudice to highlight injustices and an often double standard of a heteronormative society. Through this work, Orchard shows that even the deepest wounds can be healed through exposure and acceptance. His visual language has a constant focus on authenticity, as he is deeply informed not only by his own lived experience but also by his chosen family
By borrowing the often nostalgic and tender aesthetics of baby photos, this series replaces infants with animal companions, which celebrates the unique structure of queer families. By doing this, Orchard honours the bonds of care that can exist outside of a traditional heteronormative structure. Ultimately, he demonstrates that these animals are not just pets but are, in fact, cherished family members
